Thirteen of My Favorite Comedians

1. The Honeymooners. This entire cast is classic comedy
2. Red Skelton. An early Television comedian that was among the very best.
3. Jonathan Winters. The predecessor to Robin Williams. Winters was one of the funniest and most original comedians of his day.
4. Carol Burnett. A female comedian that hosted her own show in the 60's. I liked her better than Lucille Ball. Carol had a great supporting cast that included Harvey Korman and Tim Conway.
5. Bill Cosby. Cosby brought new dimension to family comedy on TV. The parents could be right and in charge of the family and still be funny. His stand-up routines are classic.
6. Robin Williams. His ability to improvise comedy is unmatched today. From Mork & Mindy to "Good Morning Viet Nam", to "Mrs. Doubtfire", he is one of the most versatile comedians working today.
7. Jack Lemmon. From "Some Like it Hot" and "Mr. Roberts" to "Grumpy Old Men" Jack Lemmon was one of the best comedy actors of all time.
8. Johnny Carson. While not the pioneer of late night TV. Johnny brought it to new heights. He was a master of stand-up comedy.
9. David Letterman. Letterman is far and away the best working today. He was actually Carson's pick to take over the Tonight Show.
10. Saturday Night Live...The early years. Again the cast that included Bill Murray, Dan Aykroid, John Belushi, Jane Curtain and the gang were funny nearly every week.
11. Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. This is the predecessor to Saturday night live. It launched the career of Goldie Hawn.
12. George Carlin. George may have the most unique outlook on life of anyone I know. He seems to have grown a little senile in recent years, but he is very funny.
13. Larry the Cable Guy. Ya gotta like Redneck humor to appreciate Larry, but he is one of the funniest guys working today.

Great great list. I so love SNL, but like you said, the classic SNL is the best of them all...

Good list. I'm not a huge comedy fan, but I'd put a number of these folk on a list of my own favorites.

Happy TT!

Nothing is better than a good laugh! And these folks can make me laugh.

I do like Chris Rock too - he's very inappropriate but he can make me laugh.

Happy TT.

My husband and I still watch the SNL reruns and roll on the floor laughing. Our kids just stare at us wondering what is so funny.

Then they watch some of the junk on Comedy Central and the process is reversed.

(sigh)

Excellent list. And thanks for stopping by.

It's funny how comedy is so culture specific, isn't it! One of the comedians that makes me laugh so much I could cry is Bill Bailey. If you search him in YouTube you'll come up with quite a few clips. My favourite is the pubbe gagge. Check it out and see what you think.
Oh, and thanks for visiting me at Lives Less Ordinary!

Great list I've just finished a book on comedy writing and one interesting part was on how comedy writers used to be able to sell the same joke to comedy performers around the world who would put their own twist on it but the Internet and DVD has killed that. It was fun reading the other versions of the jokes. Also very informative about how much editing goes into a great comedy routine.

Great TT :-)

Wasn't the Carol Burnett show one of the best ever? What about Erma Bombeck?

I agree with most of your list! :)

I LOVED the Carol Burnett Show, always on Saturday nights when I was a teen and babysitting. One of my favorite scenes was when they did the take-off on Gone With The Wind when "Scarlett" was wearing the curtains, curtain rods and all.

And I don't remember the sketch, but I remember Tim Conway being a butler and sitting on a big doorknob rocking from side to side. I thought he was the funniest one on the show
